During a halving event, the number of new Bitcoins created and awarded to miners is cut in half. This reduction in supply helps to maintain the scarcity of Bitcoin and contributes to its value appreciation over time. The halving events are programmed into the Bitcoin protocol and occur approximately every four years. They are an important aspect of Bitcoin's monetary policy and serve as a mechanism to control inflation. The next halving event is expected to take place in 2024.
